How Does Ultherapy® Focused Ultrasound Therapy Work?

Unlike lasers, which penetrate your skin from the outside-in, Ultherapy® bypasses the top of skin, specifically targeting the deep, structural skin tissues where collagen lives. Using ultrasound technology, Ultherapy® actually works from the inside-out to lift and tighten skin non-invasively.   In some ways, Ultherapy® is just like an ultrasound imaging procedure that expectant mothers may receive. A smooth handpiece is placed on your skin and an image of the tissue beneath is projected on a screen. This allows your practitioner to “see” where they will treat your skin.

But here’s the difference: with Ultherapy®, that very same handpiece is also used to deliver tiny deposits of focused ultrasound energy at just the right depth below the skin, to the same foundational layer typically addressed in a surgical facelift.

Your body’s response to this energy is to recondition tired skin by stimulating the growth of fresh, new collagen. The outcome is a tightening and gradual lifting-or shifting-of your skin back into a much more youthful position and form-fitting shape.

Who is a Good Candidate for Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy® is an ideal treatment option for someone with skin that has become lax to the point of looking, and often feeling, less firm.  Optimal candidates are between the ages of 30 and 65 with mild to moderate skin laxity.

 WHAT IS XEOMIN®?

Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) is a prescription medication injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults. Xeomin® contains botulinum toxin type A, a protein purified from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

HOW DOES XEOMIN® WORK?

When you squint or frown, the muscles between your eyebrows contract, causing the skin to furrow and fold. Over time, as your skin ages and loses some of its elasticity, these repeated contractions can cause persistent frown lines. Botulinum toxin type A – the active ingredient in Xeomin®– acts on nerve endings in muscles to prevent muscle fibers from contracting. By reducing these contractions, Xeomin® can temporarily reduce the lines between your eyebrows.

IS XEOMIN® PROVEN?

Xeomin® was proven effective in two randomized, double-blind, multicenter, placebo-controlled clinical trials of 547 healthy, adult patients. The average age of patients in the study was 46 years. Patients received 20 Units of Xeomin® and were classified as responders if they had a 2-grade improvement on a 4-point scale as assessed by the physician and patient. Using these criteria, treatment success was higher with Xeomin® than placebo on Day 30 in both studies (60% and 48% vs. 0% for placebo in both studies). Based on these trials, Xeomin® received FDA approval for use in glabellar lines in 2011.

Xeomin is very similar to both BOTOX and Dysport in that it works to relax certain facial muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles. It can be used to address dynamic lines on the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes, though it is very important that your injections are performed by a professional for these delicate areas.

The main difference between Xeomin and the other wrinkle relaxers on the market is that Xeomin does not contain any additives — it is pure type A botulinum toxin. This can be beneficial for patients who have used BOTOX or Dysport long-term and have developed antibodies to the additives they contain.
